The Boston Scientific Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to the Coal City Community Volunteer Fire Department, to be used for medical training and equipment. The check was presented by Darrell White, a local representative of Boston Scientific Foundation and Manager of Shared Plant Services at the Boston Scientific Spencer facility, to Coal City Community Volunteer Fire Dept. Chief Phillip Albright. The department plans to use the grant money to purchase Automatic External Defibrillators and associated equipment to better support the community of Jefferson Township . A defibrillator is used when sudden cardiac arrest occurs, and adjusts the rhythm of the heart by shocking the beat back to the normal rhythm.
The majority of calls received by the Volunteer Fire Department are medical in nature and currently there are only two responders on staff. First responders are critical to emergency support of this county, as the average travel time for Emergency Medical Service s is twenty-five minutes- the nearest hospital is almost forty-four miles away. This grant will provide the equipment necessary for responders who arrive to treat cardiac arrest and within 3-5 minutes of a call. The department, established in 1973 and entirely staffed by volunteers, will also be sending their Fire Fighters to First Responders training as part of the grant.
Mrs. Dennise Leslie, a former Coal City Community Volunteer Fire Department member, wrote and submitted the application for this grant July 1, 2007. Dennise was killed enroute to a fire on the following day; she is survived by her husband and two sons. Award of this grant is only a portion of the legacy Dennise has left with the fire department, her dedication, her long-range foresight for the department, and her uplifting attitudes will always be remembered by us.
“The Boston Scientific Foundation is please to support our local volunteer fire department, “ said Darrell White of Boston Scientific. “ We also wish to recognize and remember the dedication and service of Dennise Leslie to our community.”

The Coal City Community Fire Dept, Inc is grateful to the Boston Scientific Foundation and Dennise for receipt of this grant. We are always looking for additional members for the dept and first responders. It takes a special person to be willing to help their community as a volunteer. Our website is www.coalcityvfd.com.
